📌 Anthropic Procures Tens of Billions in Infrastructure from Akamai, Delivery Lag Delays Earnings Realization

Anthropic has reached a 7-year long-term CPU infrastructure procurement agreement with edge cloud provider Akamai. The base commitment of the agreement is between USD 11.6 billion and USD 12 billion, and can reach up to USD 20 billion to USD 20.6 billion when expansion options are included. This transaction not only reflects large model vendors’ massive investment in non-GPU computing infrastructure beyond GPU training, but also presents a paradigm of deep commercial binding.

In terms of capital structure and cost sharing, Akamai will initially fund approximately USD 5.5 billion to support the initial infrastructure buildout; in exchange and as a deep bundling mechanism, Anthropic can receive equity warrants for up to approximately 5% of Akamai as its subsequent cloud spending scale continues to expand. This arrangement of “the service provider bearing high upfront capital expenditures and the large model customer exchanging a long-term contract for equity returns” closely links infrastructure investment risk with the customer lifecycle.

However, this massive procurement will not immediately and linearly boost Akamai’s short-term performance. Calculated from the total amount, although the average annual procurement value of the contract exceeds USD 1.6 billion, the actual infrastructure delivery and service rollout exhibit a distinct non-linear pace. Because upfront construction is time-consuming and revenue recognition is not evenly distributed, Akamai has not currently raised its performance guidance for fiscal year 2026. For investors focusing on the cloud infrastructure sector, there remains a clear delivery lag in converting large off-balance-sheet order backlogs into deterministic on-balance-sheet revenue and cash flow.
